Hidden Symbolism & Secrets
The number 13, representing the original 13 colonies, is repeated obsessively on the dollar bill:
- 13 steps on the pyramid.
- 13 stars above the eagle.
- 13 vertical stripes on the shield.
- 13 arrows in the eagle's left talon.
- 13 leaves on the olive branch.
- 13 berries on the olive branch.
- Annuit Coeptis: "He (God) has favored our undertakings."
- Novus Ordo Seclorum: "New Order of the Ages."
- E Pluribus Unum: "Out of many, one."
Look very closely at the upper right corner of the front of the bill, near the large "1" and the shield shape surrounding it. Tucked in the webbing pattern is a tiny shape that many claim looks like a small owl (a symbol of wisdom) or a spider. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing states it is simply a stray ink mark or part of the complex webbing design meant to deter counterfeiters.
