Chlorophyll absorbs blue (435nm) and red (670nm) light but reflects green—making plants appear green. Explore the spectrum below.
Dark areas = absorbed by chlorophyll. Green (500–600nm) is reflected.
Photosynthesis occurs in chloroplasts. Light reactions in thylakoids produce ATP & NADPH; dark reactions in stroma fix CO₂ into glucose.
6CO₂ + 6H₂O + light → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
Carbon dioxide + water + sunlight produce glucose (sugar) + oxygen. Chlorophyll-a has a magnesium ion at its center—essential for capturing light. Plants also use carotenoids (orange/yellow) and anthocyanins (red/purple) for additional light absorption.
Green sits at 555nm—the wavelength our eyes are most sensitive to. It's the most restful color for the human eye and dominates nature.
Viewing green relaxes muscles, reduces stress, and can aid recovery. It's linked to permission ("green light"), money, and environmental movements worldwide. Forest bathing (shinrin-yoku) uses green spaces for therapeutic benefits.
Select a plant to see its watering schedule, light needs, and care tips. Overwatering is the #1 cause of indoor plant death.
Water when top 2 inches of soil are dry. Tolerates neglect. Yellow leaves = overwatering.
Drought-tolerant. Water sparingly—let soil dry completely between waterings. North-facing windows work.
Loves humidity. Mist leaves or use a pebble tray. East or west window ideal. Wipe leaves monthly.
South-facing window. Soak and dry method: water thoroughly, then wait until soil is bone dry.
Keep soil consistently moist. Bathroom or kitchen ideal. Brown tips = low humidity.
Avoid moving—ficus dislikes change. Water when top inch is dry. Dropping leaves = stress from move or draft.
Drooping leaves = needs water. Popular houseplant. Toxic to pets—keep away from cats and dogs.
Produces baby plantlets (spiderettes)—easy to propagate. May remove some VOCs in lab conditions (real-world impact minimal). Brown tips = fluoride in tap water—use filtered.

Key terms and definitions for green living and sustainability.
Look for these labels when shopping for sustainable products.
Key environmental awareness dates. Mark your calendar and take action.
Key data from UNEP, WWF Living Planet Report 2024, and climate science. Wildlife populations down 73% since 1970.
Renewable energy and efficiency are key to decarbonization. Solar and wind are now the cheapest new electricity in most regions.
Low-carbon, nutrient-dense options. Plant-based foods typically have 10–50× lower emissions than animal products.
