Born in Shrewsbury

Charles Robert Darwin is born on February 12 at The Mount, Shrewsbury. He is the fifth child of Robert and Susannah Darwin. Born into a wealthy family of doctors and industrialists (the Wedgwoods).

The Offer of a Lifetime

After giving up on medical school in Edinburgh and studying for the clergy at Cambridge (where he preferred beetle collecting), Darwin is recommended by his mentor John Henslow for a position as a naturalist aboard the HMS Beagle.

Marriage & Illness

Marries his cousin, Emma Wedgwood. They move to London, then to Down House in Kent (1842). Darwin begins to suffer from a mysterious chronic illness that plagues him for the rest of his life, often keeping him confined to his home.

Publication of 'The Origin'

After 20 years of gathering evidence and a rush triggered by Alfred Russel Wallace's similar findings, Darwin publishes On the Origin of Species. It sells out immediately and sparks a worldwide debate.

Death and Burial

Darwin dies at Down House on April 19. Despite his wish to be buried locally, the scientific community insists on a state funeral. He is buried in Westminster Abbey, near Isaac Newton.
